DOMINIQUE SAMYN - WERBROUCK
“ I am always looking for the unexpected, the surprise which makes you wonder”.
Born in Flanders, Belgium in 1955.
She studied ceramics at the Fine Arts Academy at Tielt, Belgium. In 1989 she moves to the Washington
DC area, where she studies painting at the Corcoran College of Fine Arts.
From 1998 to 2001 she lives and works in Lima (Peru) with frequent travels to Ecuador, Cuba and Brazil.
From 2002 - 2005 she worked at her studio and at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center in Alexandria,
Virginia.
Since 2006 she works at her studio in Cerrillos, Santa Fe County, New Mexico.

Her work is inspired by the Cobra movement in Europe (Karel Appel, Alechinsky and Asger Jorn) known
for their uninhibited expressionism.
Dominique focuses on three elements: energy, color and surprise.
She had numerous shows and awards in the Washington DC area, Belgium and in Peru.
"I work in series from events or places that marked me.  Through layering, scraping,
automatic writing and reworking I go to a place beyond my control.
Recently, a toddler called Noah has entered my life.  Although he lives far away, he is on
my mind.  He touches me.  He pops up in my dreams and in my work.  I hope to enter his
world through my paintings.  Toys, games, fantastic creatures and cheerful colors are
my subject. I have always been attracted to children’s art.  I admire their freedom,
their spontaneity and their fearlessness."
